MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Pfeiffer received career performances from junior Kelsey Blauser and sophomore Haley Denny but the women's volleyball team (0-12, 0-6 CC) dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Barton (4-9, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon. Blauser set a career-high with 16 kills and Denny set a personal best with 31 digs in the narrow loss. Freshman Shenelle Charlot (15) and sophomore Laura Fortner (10) equaled their career highs in kills but the Falcons fell just short in a tight battle.
Blauser notched a .314 hitting percentage on the afternoon as the Falcons hit a season-high .155 as a team. Fortner was able to provide a lift off the bench as senior Kelly Lancellot was forced to the bench due to injury.
Barton ran out to the early lead, securing a 25-19 victory in the first set.
Charlot stepped up early in the second set, netting four kills in the first Falcons first six points. Barton would push the lead to 14-11 before Pfeiffer surged ahead. The Falcons scored 10 of the next 13 points to grab the 21-17 advantage. Barton answered with three straight to even the score before Charlot took over again. She recorded a kill to give the Falcons the lead and then served the final three points to give Pfeiffer the 25-21 victory.
Barton took the third set 25-15 and scored 11 unanswered at one point but the Falcons were undeterred. In perhaps their best set of the season, Pfeiffer hit .333 as a team and recorded only three errors to take the fourth set 25-17.
An attack error by the Bulldogs gave Pfeiffer the early lead in set five. The back-and-forth set continued as Blauser's final kill gave Pfeiffer the 8-7 lead, which turned out to be the Falcons final advantage of the afternoon. Barton seized control with a 6-1 run and took the decisive set 15-11.
Barton was led by Shae Schmidt who finished with 14 kills. Melissa Cochran added 13 kills and Kaitlyn Micol chipped in with 12. Amanda Grandy recorded 23 digs and Riley Bane handed out 43 assists.
Andrea Lopez had 12 digs for Pfeiffer and Allison Rosas added 10. Katie Wilson and Anna Tomkins combined for 42 assists in the match.
The Falcons continue their six match home stand when they host Erksine on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
