MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer Falcons (15-11, 3-1 CC) took both games of their doubleheader with the Barton Bulldogs (5-12, 1-5 CC) as Kennedy Lester played a crucial part in both wins. The sophomore pitcher took the win in game one and came back in game two to earn her third save of the season.
In game one, Lester started off shaky in game one as she walked lead-off hitter Megan Kelly. Kelly then stole second base and then advanced on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Hannah Jones singled in Barton's first one of the game.
In the bottom of the second, Anna Lauren Brafford homered to straight away center field to tie the score at one run apiece.
Barton's Kelly was at it again as she led off the third inning with a solo homerun down the left field line for the 2-1 lead.
The Falcons answered the bottom half of the inning as catcher Rachel Crowder singled up the middle as it brought home Vada Blue Sherrill.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brafford doubled down the left field line to bring home the go ahead run, Bailey Sherrill.
After a Vada Sherrill hit-by-pitch, the freshman stole her 23rd base of the season and then Crowder capped off the game as she doubled in Sherrill from second base for the 4-2 lead.
Lester went the distance as she scattered five hits, allowing two runs and striking out six.
In game two, a pitchers dual between Falcon starter Sydney Poole and Bulldog Liz White set the pace early.
Poole allowed two hits through the first five innings and White matched her through four innings allowing just three.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, third baseman Emma Tuttle singled to right center. After a Bailey Sherrill foul out to left field, Tuttle stole second base, allowing Crowder to single in Tuttle from second base.
Barton scored two runs in the top of the sixth as Hannah Jones sacrificed bunted to bring in Megan Kelly from third. Next batter, Rachel Jordan singled down the left line to bring in Taylor Bowden from second base and to give Barton a 2-1 lead.
Pfeiffer took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth as Chandler Walker and Brafford hit back-to-back homeruns that gave Pfeiffer the insurmountable 4-2 lead going into the top of the 7th.
In the top of the 7th, Pfeiffer's defense struggled behind reliever Sam Jarmusch. The first ttwo Bulldogs reached on errors. Jarmusch got next batter Sam Bass to strike out.
Falcon Head Coach Monte Sherrill brought in game one starter Lester to save game two as she induced Bowden to line out to right field, but third base runner Sydney Speight hesitated on the tag up and then a perfect throw by Brafford forced her back to third base and consequently having Megan Kelly stuck between second and third in a run down. The throw from Tuttle to second base sent Speight home but Callie Kuykendall's throw ended the game and the final third out of the evening.
Falcons' starter Poole ended up with a no decision as she pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing just three hits on two runs.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. as they host the Tusculum Pioneers in a non-conference doubleheader.
