BELMONT, N.C. – The Pfeiffer Falcons (23-13, 9-3 CC) softball team swept both games of their double header with Belmont Abbey (10-22, 4-8 CC) on Wednesday as junior catcher Rachel Crowder hit her school record 17th career home run in the game one, eight inning victory.
The Crusaders got on the scoreboard first as Jena Reisenauer homered off of Falcon starter Sydney Poole to lead off the bottom of the first.
In the top of the fourth, Chandler Walker singled with two outs and then stole second base. Next batter Anna Lauren Brafford singled to the shortstop but a throwing error allowed Walker to come around to tie the score at one apiece.
With Walker and Bailey Sherrill on base with two outs in the top of the sixth, Jessica Jackson doubled in Walker from second as the Falcons took the late inning, 2-1 lead.
Belmont Abbey went to the bullpen for Samantha Jacobs in the top of the seventh but after getting Vada Blue Sherrill to ground out, Crowder seemingly put the game away with her seventh homer of the season.
In the next half inning, Poole allowed leadoff hitter Alexis Periero to single prompting coach Monte Sherrill to bring in his redshirt senior Sam Jarmusch. Jarmusch allowed a single to her first batter and then next batter Brooke Pegram singled to score Pereiro to score. Next batter , Sloane McPeak hit a sac fly to left field allowing Pegram to tie the score at three.
In the top of the eighth, Walker was placed on second based as she then advanced on a Brafford groundout. Pfeiffer took the lead when Bailey Sherrill hit the ball to the right side, allowing Walker to score for the 4-3 lead.
Jarmusch struck out the last two batters of the game as she picked up her fourth win on the season.
In game two, Pfeiffer jumped out to an early two run lead when Kiana Millsaps laid down a sac bunt allowing Vada Sherrill to score from third base and moved up Crowder to third base. Next batter, Walker singled in Crowder.
Millsaps again added onto the Falcon lead as she hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Two batters later, Bailey Sherrill singled to right and then advanced on a throwing error by the Crusader left fielder Pegram. That allowed next batter Jessica Jackson to single in Sherrill from second base.
Jarmusch allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but shut down Belmont Abbey in the bottom of the seventh. Jarmusch picked up her fifth win of the season in game two as she went seven , giving up five hits and struck out five.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday as they travel to Limestone in a Conference Carolinas double header with first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
