SAVANNAH, GA - Behind a three-hitter by pitcher Jane Trzaska, the No. 2 seed Armstrong St. Pirates (37-12) defeated the No. 6 seeded Pfeiffer Falcons (38-16) by a final score of 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Catcher Logan Harrell provided the only offense of the contest as her two run homerun off the scoreboard in right center field advanced the Pirates to the Regional final and sent Pfeiffer into an elimination game later this afternoon.
Emma Tuttle had two of Pfeiffer's three hits on the afternoon and Jessica Jackson added the other. The Falcons had the bases loaded on two separate occasions but were unable to cash in.
Freshman Callie Kuykendall gave a tremendous effort on the mound but dropped her first postseason decision. The right hander falls to 5-1 in postseason play and 10-2 on the season as she allowed two runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Senior Sam Jarmusch came on to get the final five outs of the ball game in relief.
The Falcons played strong defense in the contest and were able to turn three double plays.
The game was scoreless for the first five innings before the Pirates struck. After the Falcons left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Trzaska led off the sixth with an infield single. The next batter was Harrell who took a pitch that was out of the strike zone and sent it out to right center.
Tuttle led off the bottom of the seventh with a single but the next three batters were set down as the Falcons were shut out for the first time in 23 games.
Pfeiffer will take on the winner of this afternoon's matchup between Lenoir-Rhyne and USC Aiken. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to take on Armstrong St tomorrow in the regional final. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
