Softball Closes Regular Season With Nonconference Sweep of Ferrum

Pfeiffer Softball Concludes Regular Season With Sweep of Ferrum

Misenheimer, N.C. (April 25, 2022) – The Pfeiffer University softball team completed the regular season on Monday afternoon with a nonconference doubleheader sweep of visiting Ferrum College at Jack Ingram Field.

The Basics
Game 1 – Pfeiffer def. Ferrum, 3-1
Game 2 – Pfeiffer def. Ferrum, 6-1

Records
Ferrum – 21-15
Pfeiffer – 32-8

Location – Misenheimer, N.C. – Jack Ingram Field
How it Happened – Game 1
Pfeiffer pitcher Ashlynn Kennedy tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out a trio of Ferrum batters to improve her record to 15-2 on the season.

Offensively, freshman Gracie Griffin (Calabash, N.C.) put the Falcons on top in the first inning when she punched a double to right center field that allowed Kennedy to race around and score.  Senior Alexis Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) would deliver an RBI single to give the Falcons the 2-1 lead.

Kennedy then proceeded to retire six straight Ferrum batters but that string was broken when Ferrum opened the fourth inning with a single to left center.  An RBI groundout by Lyndsey Sears plated a run for the Panthers, closing the deficit to 2-1.

That score would last until the sixth inning, but freshman Emma Bulling (Ararat, N.C.) roped a single through the right side of the Ferrum infield to allow Caiti Mickles to score, pushing the lead to 3-1.

Ferrum would threaten to tie the game in the sixth after putting runners on second and third, but Kennedy forced a flyout to right field to end the threat.

In the seventh, with one out, Kennedy walked a Ferrum batter, but was able to record the final two outs on consecutive flyouts to right field.

Game 2
Pfeiffer freshman pitcher Emma Bullin threw five innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one run to improve her season record to 6-0.  Bulling also struck out three Ferrum batters during the outing.

Pfeiffer senior Hannah Tyner started things off for the Falcons in the second inning when she hit a two-RBI to center field to give Pfeiffer the 2-0 lead.

Ferrum cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning, but Alexis Walter would get that run back for Pfeiffer on a RBI single to second base, pushing the lead to 3-1.

Three more runs came across for Pfeiffer in the sixth, the first on a passed ball and the next two on a two-RBI double to right centerfield from Griffin, making it 6-1.

That's all the run support Bullin would need, as she sat down the first two Ferrum batters in the seventh.  She then allowed a single before forcing a pop up to end the game.

Up Next
By virtue of winning the USA South East Division Title, the Falcons will host three days of postseason play at Jack Ingram Field.

Thursday afternoon, Pfeiffer will host the fifth-seed from the West Division, Wesleyan College, at 2:00 p.m.  Wesleyan advanced to divisional play by taking a 4-0 road win over West Division fourth-seeded Maryville College on Monday night.
