Falcon Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at N.C. Wesleyan

Rocky Mount, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2023) --The Pfeiffer University volleyball team split a pair of matches at a tri-match hosted at N.C. Wesleyan.

Pfeiffer fell to the host N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops in straight sets (20-25, 15-25, 21-25) in the first match of the day and downed Johnson & Wales University by a 3-0 score in the final match of the afternoon at Everett Gymnasium.

The split makes Pfeiffer's record 6-10 overall and 1-8 in USA South action.

Summer Matthews finished with seven kills against NCWU to lead the Falcons attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .375. got 7 digs from Morgan Shrader to lead them defensively.

How It Happened vs. NCWU

SET 1 | The Falcons found themselves in an early hole, dropping the first set 25-20. Pfeiffer trailed by as many as six points as North Carolina Wesleyan grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Battling Bishops took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | A 25-15 second-set loss put Pfeiffer behind two sets to none in the match. The Falcons fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Pfeiffer could not win the third set and was swept by North Carolina Wesleyan. The Falcons came up short by the score of 25-21. North Carolina Wesleyan grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that was knotted up seven times before the Battling Bishops took over in the second half of the stanza.

Against JWU, sophomore Haedyn McGrath finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Falcons attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .474. got 12 digs from Gabby Edwards to lead them defensively.

How It Happened vs. JWU

SET 1 | The Falcons took control on the first point and never trailed to secure the first set 25-17. Pfeiffer opened up its biggest lead, eight points, to close out the set, totaling 15 kills in the process.

SET 2 | Pfeiffer took the second set 25-14 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The Falcons led from the opening point on in the set to earn the victory. Pfeiffer opened up as much as a 12 point lead at 21-9 before finishing off the set. The Pfeiffer offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza. Pfeiffer's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Pfeiffer took set three to win in straight sets. The Falcons came out on top of a tight battle, winning 27-25 in a set that was tied six times and had three lead changes.
