Big Games from Horton, Bynum Not Enough in Pfeiffer's 63-52 Setback to N.C. Wesleyan

MISENHEIMER, N.C. (Dec. 1, 2023)  -- Sophomore Miya Horton and junior Alexis Bynum combined to score 32 total points, which equated to 61.5 percent of Pfeiffer's points - but the Falcons fell to the N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops 63-52 at home in Merner Gym on Friday evening.

The Falcons (2-4, 1-2 USA South) had two players score in double figures, led by Horton, who had 17 points. Bynum added 15 points and three steals and sophomore Hannah Isley added six points and three blocks.

Pfeiffer forced 16 NCWU turnovers. which turned into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Bynum's three steals led the way individually for the Falcons.

How It Happened

Pfeiffer started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Angel Roland, to take an early lead with 7:10 left in the first quarter. North Carolina Wesleyan then responded to tie things up at 10-10 heading into the second quarter. Pfeiffer did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.

North Carolina Wesleyan then took a 21-19 lead before Pfeiffer responding by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Horton, to take a 26-21 lead. The Falcons kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 28-23 advantage heading into halftime. Pfeiffer dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 18 points close to the basket.

Pfeiffer then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Battling Bishops 41-38 entering the fourth. Pfeiffer played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.

Pfeiffer came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kenadie Hudler's three, to seize a 43-41 lead with 8:21 to go in the contest. North Carolina Wesleyan re-asserted control, outscoring the Falcons 22-9 the rest of the way to hand Pfeiffer the 63-52 loss. Pfeiffer took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

» Pfeiffer played solid perimeter defense, holding North Carolina Wesleyan to 17 percent from beyond the arc on 18 attempts.
» The Pfeiffer bench made an impact by adding 21 points to its scoring output.
» The Pfeiffer defense forced 16 turnovers.
» The Falcons were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
» Pfeiffer got a team-high six rebounds from freshman Lola Cabiness-Ali.
