Pfeiffer Baseball Comes Back to Down Guilford 5-4

Pfeiffer Baseball Comes Back to Down Guilford, 5-4

Misenheimer, N.C. (March 15, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University baseball team came back from a 4-0 deficit to down visiting Guilford College 5-4 in 11 innings at a chilly Joe Ferebee Field on Wednesday night.

The Basics
With the Quakers leading 4-0, Pfeiffer started the comeback in the sixth inning with Thomas Ashby scoring from third after sophomore Josh Turner was caught stealing at second base, trimming the Quaker lead to 4-1.

In the eighth inning, pinch hitter Christian Ezzell laced an RBI double to center field that allowed Turner to score to make it 4-2.  Later in the inning, Cory Lackey singled and advanced to second on an error by the Guilford left fielder, scoring Ezzell and making it 4-3.

Jake Brown then tied the game at 4-4 when he ripped a single up the middle that allowed Lackey to race home.

Guilford threatened in the ninth inning by loading the bases with two outs.  Falcon reliever Adam Bridgeman then forced a fly out to end the threat.

The Quakers retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

Guilford once again got a runner in scoring position, but a groundout to Lacey at second base ended the threat once again.

Pfeiffer went down in order in the 10th inning and in the 11th, Guilford once again loaded the bases, but Pfeiffer's Justin Smith struck out Guilford's Grayson Tudor to once again thwart the Guilford threat.

The Falcons' Jake Brown drew a leadoff walk in the 11th inning and Brady Parker also was the benefactor of a walk that put runners on first and second.  Alec Bell then moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, putting the winning run just 90 feet away.

An intentional walk was then issued to Jackson Leck, loading the bases with one out.  Guilford pitcher Chase Wade then struck out Pfeiffer's Thomas Ashby to record the second out of the inning, sending Turner to the plate.

After falling down 0-2, Turner was issued three straight balls to bring it to 3-2.  Following a pair of foul balls, Wade's full-count offering missed the mark allowing the winning run to walk in and sending the Falcons to the 5-4 win.

Cory Lackey and Josh Turner each recorded three hits on the day, with each also recording a double and an RBI in the process.  Jake Brown also had an RBI as he went 2-of-5 from the plate.

Four other Falcons recorded hits, as the Falcon offense battered the Guilford pitching staff for 12 hits. Quaker pitching also issued eight walks in the game.

Pfeiffer pitcher Justin Smith (1-0)  earned the win while Guilford's Chase Wade (1-1) was credited with the loss.
