Lackey Caps Pfeiffer's Comeback Win Over Roanoke

Cory Lackey delivered an RBI single on a full-count in the bottom of the 10thn inning to send Pfeiffer to a 16-15 comeback win over visiting Roanoke College on Wednesday afternoon at a rainy and cool Joe Ferebee Field
How it Happened
Down 12-4 in the seventh inning, Pfeiffer's offense exploded for nine runs in the frame to take the 13-12 lead.
During the big inning, Lackey delivered a three-run home run to left field that would push Pfeiffer ahead 13-12. In the inning
Jiwon Yun and
Josh Turner drove in runs on groundouts while
Christian Ezzell and
Carter Merrill picked up RBI on singles.Â
Alec Bell would also collect two RBI in the frame on his single through the middle of the Roanoke infield.
Roanoke was able to get a run in the eight inning to tie the game once more at 13-13. In the ninth, the Maroons looked to end the game with a solo home run from Jonny Wall and an RBI double from Owen Lawn that gave the Maroons the 15-13 lead.
In the Falcon ninth, Bell once again knocked in a run with an RBI single down the right field line to pull to 15-14. With Bell on third and Lackey on first, Roanoke attempted a pickoff at first base, but the ball was misplayed by the Maroon first baseman which allowed Bell to scamper home to tie the game once more at 15-15.
IN the 10
th inning, Pfeiffer pitcher
Sam Odum sat the Maroons down in order, with a strkeout to begin the inning followed by a fly outs to center field and right field.
In the 10th inning, Pfeiffer's Ezzell flied out to center field and
Carter Merrill grounded out to shortstop to start the inning.
Following an
Austin Wood walk, Bell would draw a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second. Following a Roanoke pitching change, Lackey delivered the game winning hit, which ignited a celebration in short right field, with Pfeiffer completing the 16-15 comeback.
All told, Lackey would finish 4-of-6 from the plate with four RBI, which included a double and a home run. Teammate
Zach Ferrell also hit a home run while
Jake Brown,
Brady Parker and
Austin Wood each hitting doubles in the win.
Pfeiffer used seven pitchers in the game, while Roanoke used eight pitchers. Freshman
Sam Odum was credited with the win after throwing one inning , allowing no hits while striking out one Roanoke batter.
The Maroons' Caleb Grizzard was saddled with the loss, as he tossed 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits while walking two.
The Falcons will finish USA South play at home this upcoming weekend, April 29-30 against Mary Baldwin.
Game times will be announced as they are confirmed due to the threat of inclement weather.
