Pfeiffer Baseball Beats Ferrum 12-11
Misenheimer, N.C. (April 5, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University baseball team outlasted visiting Ferrum College in a nonconference baseball game at a warm and sunny Joe Ferebee Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Basics
The visiting Panthers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first inning, but Pfeiffer quickly cut that lead in half with three runs in their half of the first. Senior leadoff hitter
Cory Lackey (Wilkesboro, N.C.) started the comeback with a towering solo home run down the left field line to plate Pfeiffer's first run of the game. The home run was the second of the season for Lackey. Later in the inning, two runs crossed via an error by the Ferrum first baseman, pulling Pfeiffer to 6-3.
Ferrum would go up 9-3 after plating two runs in the second inning and one in the third inning.
The Falcon comeback started in the third when
C.J. Acosta (Burlington, N.C.) belted a one-out grand slam, his first round-tripper of the season, pulling Pfeiffer to 9-7.
In the sixth inning, Pfeiffer piled on four more runs to take the 11-9 lead. Senior
Zach Ferrell (Apex, N.C.) delivered an RBI single, as did senior teammate
Jake Brown (Winston-Salem, N.C.).
Graduate student
Christian Ezzell (Monroe, N.C.) laced a two-RBI single to provide the 11-9 lead. Ezzell would also draw a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning to push the Pfeiffer lead to 12-9.
Ferrum then struck for a pair of runs in the eighth inning to draw to 12-11, but Pfeiffer relief pitcher
Jacob Landis (Gastonia, N.C.) entered the game in the ninth and after giving up a single to Brevard's Nick Funk, forced a double-play.
Brevard was able to get runners on first and second with two outs, but Landis forced a grounder that would close the game and earning his first save of the season.
Pfeiffer's
Adam Bridgeman (Spartanburg, S.C.) would get credit for the win, as he threw one inning without allowing a hit.
