Falcon Volleyball Takes 3-1 Road Win at Mary Baldwin

Staunton, Va. (Sept. 23, 2023) --The Pfeiffer University volleyball team knocked off the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels 3-1 (25-18, 25-9, 18-25, 25-9) Saturday on tin a USA South match.

The conference win improved Pfeiffer's record to 5-5 overall and 1-4 in USA South action.

Mattie Hinson finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Falcons attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .467.   Pfeiffer also got 10 digs from sophomore libero Gabby Edwards along with six blocks from fellow sophomore Madison Tate to lead the Falcons defensively.

Game Notes

» Morgan Shrader had a team-high two aces in the win.
» Pfeiffer never trailed on the way to winning the first set 25-18.
» Pfeiffer never trailed on the way to winning the second set 25-9.
» Mattie Hinson had a team-high eight kills for Pfeiffer.
» Pfeiffer got a team-high 10 digs from Gabby Edwards.
» Pfeiffer attackers were helped by a match-high 17 assists from Kylee Mayberry.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Falcons grabbed control on the first point and never trailed to secure the first set 25-18. Pfeiffer led by 11 points at 24-13 before closing out the set.

SET 2 | Pfeiffer carried momentum from a set-one win by earning a 25-9 victory in the second set. The Falcons led from the opening point on in the set to earn the victory. Pfeiffer opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 16 points, to close out the set. The Falcons hit .563 over the course of the set. The Pfeiffer offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Pfeiffer saw its chance at a 3-0 sweep end when Mary Baldwin took set three. The Falcons fell in a tough set 25-18. Pfeiffer trailed by as many as eight points as Mary Baldwin grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that was tied up six times before the Fighting Squirrels took over the lead.

SET 4 | Pfeiffer then responded to claim the match win with a 25-9 fourth-set victory. The Falcons grabbed control of the set at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way. Pfeiffer ended the stanza on a high note by opening up its biggest lead, 16 points, to finish off the set. Pfeiffer got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Mary Baldwin attacks in the stanza.

Pfeiffer will head to USA South foe Brevard on Wednesday, Sept. 27.  First serve from Boshamer Gym on the Brevard College campus is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
