Big Games From Horton, Ochoa-Contreras Not Enough in Pfeiffer's 77-36 Loss at Southern Virginia

Buena Vista, Va. (Jan. 13, 2024) --Miya Horton and Mara Ochoa-Contreras combined to score 23 total points but the Falcons fell to the Southern Virginia Knights 77-36 on the road in a USA South game on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (3-10, 2-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Horton, who had 13 points and two steals. Ochoa-Contreras tacked on 10 points and Kenadie Hudler added four points and two steals.

Pfeiffer forced 23 SVU turnovers turning those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Freshman Peyton McPeters led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

Pfeiffer struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The Falcons continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 31-17 halftime deficit.

Southern Virginia continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-20 advantage before Pfeiffer went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 38-26 with 3:39 to go in the third. Southern Virginia countered and stretched its lead to 51-33 heading into the fourth. Pfeiffer took advantage of five Southern Virginia turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.

Pfeiffer could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 77-36. Pfeiffer fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down one shot to account for three of its three points.

Game Notes

» Miya Horton, Mara Ochoa-Contreras, and Hannah Isley combined to account for 78 percent of the Falcons points.
» The Pfeiffer bench came alive by scoring 15 points to its scoring output.
