Pfeiffer Women's Basketball Falls to JWU 66-56 in Home Opener

Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 9, 2024)--The Pfeiffer women's basketball team got a 22-point showing from the bench, but fell 66-56 to visiting Johnson & Wales at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by freshman Ava Hairston, who had 20 points and four steals. Senior Alexis Bynum tacked on 10 points and four assists while sophomore Lola Cabaniss-Ali added five points, 13 rebounds and two steals.

Cabaniss-Ali pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Pfeiffer, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into six second chance points.

The Pfeiffer defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 29 JWU Charlotte turnovers while committing 23. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hairston's four steals led the way individually for the Falcons.

How It Happened

Pfeiffer struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-4 at the end of the first quarter.

JWU kept adding to their lead, building a 24-4 advantage before Pfeiffer went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Hairston to narrow the deficit to 24-12. JWU would respond and expanded its lead, leaving the Falcons trailing 31-18 heading into halftime.

After intermission, Pfeiffer cut its deficit to 44-33 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Hannah Isley, to trim its deficit to 44-41 with zero seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Pfeiffer took advantage of eight Wildcat turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of takeaways.

Johnson and Wales kept widening their lead in the fourth quarter, constructing a 66-50 advantage before Pfeiffer went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Bynum's layup, that would provide the eventual 66-56 final..
