Pfeiffer def. Roanoke, 9-5
SALEM, Va. --Thomas Ashby and Ben Barnes each racked up three hits to help lead the Pfeiffer Falcons baseball team over the Roanoke Maroons 9-5 on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va.
Nate Callahan (3-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (17-18). The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing two walks and striking out two. Badin Gusa also made an impact on the mound for the Falcons, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits.
In addition to his three hits, Ashby had a double, two walks and an RBI to lead the Falcons. Barnes added a home run, a walk and two RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Javier also helped out for Pfeiffer, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding two doubles and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Falcons first put runs on the board in the second inning. Pfeiffer scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Connor Welker.
The Maroons then rallied to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead before the Falcons got back on the board in the third. Javier came across to score the lone run of the inning for Pfeiffer, which brought the score level at 3-3.
That 3-3 tie turned into a 5-3 Pfeiffer lead in the fourth. The Falcons added two to their tally on Barnes' two-run homer. .
The Maroons fought back, closing the gap to 5-4 until Pfeiffer added some insurance in the sixth. Ashby crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Falcons, bringing the Pfeiffer advantage to 6-4.
The Falcons kept Roanoke off the board before building on their lead to 9-4 the following inning. Roanoke put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Falcons still coasted to the 9-5 win.
