Christopher Newport pulls away from Pfeiffer for 80-66 win
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Nov. 30, 20250 — Christopher Newport used a strong second half to defeat Pfeiffer 80-66 on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
The Captains (5-2) outscored Pfeiffer 45-35 after halftime, turning a four-point lead into a decisive victory. Zyir Baskerville led CNU with 25 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 11 of 19 from the field and hitting three 3-pointers. Toa Hollenbeck added 18 points, while Tyson Henderson contributed 11 points and seven assists.
Pfeiffer (4-5) was paced by
Doug Smith, who scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed four rebounds.
Justin Gaten hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, and
DeJaun Sidney added 12 points and four blocks.
The Falcons led by six early in the first half after back-to-back threes from Gaten, but CNU's depth proved decisive. The Captains dominated the glass 53-35 and got 51 points from their bench compared to Pfeiffer's seven.
Both teams shot under 40% in the first half, but CNU heated up after the break, hitting 52.8% from the floor and 4 of 7 from deep. Pfeiffer finished at 38.2% overall and 31.8% from 3-point range.
The Falcons will return to play when it travels to Division I Longwood University for an exhibition game on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
