N.C. Wesleyan Outlasts Pfeiffer Women, 78-71
Misenheimer, N.C. - (Jan. 22, 2022) – The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team put forth a tremendous effort, but it was not enough as visiting N.C. Wesleyan took a 77-71 USA South win at Merner Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Pfeiffer, after being down by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, put together a rally late to draw to within 36-32 at halftime thanks to a buzzer-beating three pointer from
Shalonda Wilkins (Chesterfield, Va.).
Pfeiffer continued to hang tough with the Bishops, cutting the lead to 44-43 after a three-pointer from
Alexus Boyd (Raleigh, N.C.) at the 5:27 mark of the third quarter.Â
N.C. Wesleyan would take the 57-50 lead into the fourth quarter, but that would evaporate once more, with senior
Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) providing a layup at 7:54 to draw Pfeiffer to within 59-58.
After jumping ahead 68-60, N.C. Wesleyan allowed Pfeiffer to once again trim the lead to four at 68-64, but that would be the closest the Falcons would get the rest of the way, with the Bishops taking the 78-71 USA South win.
The Falcons were led by
Alexis Bynum (Charlotte, N.C.), who had a career-high 22 points while making three from long range. Senior teammate
Mya Johnson (Roxboro, N.C.) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Boyd finished with 10 points in the loss.
Kayrisma Harrison led N.C. Wesleyan with 22 points and 16 rebounds.
The loss drops Pfeiffer to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in USA South play while N.C. Wesleyan improves to 8-7 and 6-2 in conference play.
The Falcons will return to play on Sunday, Jan. 23 with a USA South road game at Methodist. Tipoff is schedule for 1:00 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C.
