Pfeiffer Women Prevail at Salem 78-63
Winston-Salem, N.C. (February 1, 2022) – The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team traveled to Salem College on Tuesday night and came away with the 78-63 victory. The win was the 7
th consecutive win against the Spirits.
Senior
Brina Bentley erupted for 22 points on the night for the Falcons (9-13, 5-9 USA South). Bentley narrowly missed a double-double after pulling in 9 rebounds.
Pfeiffer displayed a balanced offensive attack that saw 5 players reach double figures on the night. Fellow senior,
Mya Johnson added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double was the third on the season for Johnson.
The freshman trio of
Alexis Bynum,
Kenadie Hudler, and
Tanaeshea Ellison also reached double figure scoring. The three each contributed 10 points on the night. Ellison also pulled in 8 rebounds and had 4 steals which were second on the night to Bentley's 5 steals.
For the Spirits (2-15, 1-10 USA South), Alize Munn led the way scoring 18 points, securing 8 rebounds, and creating 5 steals. Cree Bass came off the bench for Salem to score 10 points. Â
In the first quarter, Pfeiffer would come out cold, scoring 5 points and shooting 13% from the field. Their defense would keep them in the game as they forced seven turnovers and held Salem to 29% shooting.
In the second quarter, Salem would push their lead to 15 points with 1:31 left in the half. The Falcons would score the last two baskets of the half to enter halftime trailing by 11 points.
Pfeiffer would begin to turn things around in the third quarter. The Falcons would go on a 11-0 run to tie the score 35-35. The two teams would battle the rest of the quarter, trading baskets and the lead. with Salem eventually emerging with a 1-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Pfeiffer would begin the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run and never look back. The lead would eventually grow to 19 points. The Falcons would hold Salem to 15 points, while scoring 31, in the quarter and force 7 turnovers.
The Pfeiffer women will have time to rest after playing 5 games in eight days. They will return to action Thursday, February 3
rd as they will host Averett University in Merner Gymnasium, in a game that was rescheduled from January 4
th. Tip time will be 7:00 p.m.
