Pfeiffer Women's Basketball Takes Down Salem 65-58

Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 20, 2024) --The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team got a 36-point performance from the bench on the way to a 65-58 USA South win against the Salem College Spirits at home in Merner Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (4-10, 3-7) had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore Miya Horton, who had 18 points and three steals. Junior Kenadie Hudler added 16 points and fellow junior Alexis Bynum helped out with 12 points, four assists and two steals coming off the bench.

Freshman Lola Cabiness-Ali pulled down seven offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Pfeiffer, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into seven second chance points.

Pfeiffer's defense held Salem to only 37.5 percent shooting from the field and did not allow a three-pointer on the afternoon.

How It Happened

After playing to a 3-3 tie early in the game, Pfeiffer went on a 7-0 run with 7:37 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Cabiness-Ali, to take a 10-3 lead. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-12 advantage. Pfeiffer relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.

Pfeiffer built that first quarter lead to 35-26 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 1:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Horton, to increase its lead to 43-26. The Spirits cut into that lead, but the Falcons still enjoyed a 44-28 advantage heading into halftime. Pfeiffer forced seven Salem (NC) turnovers in the period and turned them into 11 points.

After intermission, Pfeiffer held on to its advantage and owned a 62-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Pfeiffer's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 18 third-quarter points.
