Baseball Drops USA South DH at N.C. Wesleyan

GAME 1
North Carolina Wesleyan def. Pfeiffer, 13-5


ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (March 16, 2024) -- The Pfeiffer UNiversity baseball team dropped a pair of games at No. 21 N.C. Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

Pfeiffer pitcher Thad Lewis (1-2) started and absorbed the loss on the mound for Pfeiffer (6-7, 0-2).

C.J. Acosta led the way offensively for the Falcons, going 1-for-2 in thegame with a double, three walks and an RBI. Joe Javier also had a pair of RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons were trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Pfeiffer picked up a pair of runs in the frame.

The Falcons deficit grew to 8-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the sixth inning. Pfeiffer plated two runs off of North Carolina Wesleyan pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Acosta, which brought the score to 8-4 in favor of the Battling Bishops.

North Carolina Wesleyan built their lead to 12-4 before the Pfeiffer offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 12-5 in the seventh. The Falcons were unable to get any closer, as North Carolina Wesleyan added one run to their tally on the way to a 13-5 final.

GAME NOTES
» Pfeiffer's highest scoring inning was the sixth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Pfeiffer pitchers faced 42 North Carolina Wesleyan hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out three.

In game two the Falcons put together a ferocious comeback, scoring three runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell by a final of 7-6.

Nate Callahan (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Pfeiffer (6-8, 0-3 USA South). Freshman Ivan Delp started the game and tossed five innings, surrendering one run on five hits, walking one while striking out three NCWU batters.

Offensively, the Falcons were paced by Wilson Lohrer, who went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI. Austin Wood drew four walks in the game while senior tammate Cory Lackey had a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Falcons first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Ben Barnes came across to score the lone run of the inning for Pfeiffer and get them on the board.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the seventh inning, when the Falcons put runs on the scoreboard once again. Pfeiffer picked up two runs when a single from Lohrer brought home Carter Merrill and Zach. Ferrell, which pused the Falcons lead to 3-1.

North Carolina Wesleyan came back to tie the ballgame at 3-3 before Pfeiffer reclaimed a 6-3 advantage in the ninth inning. The Falcons got a run-scoring double off the bat of as part of a three-run frame. The Falcons were unable to hold the lead, as North Carolina Wesleyan scored four times in the ninth to take the 7-6 win.
