Box Score Pfeiffer Men's Soccer Falls in Season Opener at Piedmont, 4-2
Demorest, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2021) – Playing in their first match of the season, the Pfeiffer University men's soccer team fell to host Piedmont College 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex in Demorest, Ga.
The Falcons (0-1) took a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to first half goals from freshmen Jessie Dancy (Concord, N.C.) and Sam Stewart (Belhaven, N.C.). After Piedmont's Cameron Earls put the Lions up in the 18th minute, Dancy received a pass from Caz Dabrowski (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) and headed the ball into traffic where it glanced off a Lion defender and into the top left corner to tie the match at 1-1.
Stewart put the Falcons up 2-1 when he scored his first career goal in the 30th minute, a lead Pfeiffer would carry into halftime.
In the second half, Piedmont's Matthew Lofton curled a free kick into the Falcon goal in the 54th minute to tie it at 2-2. Piedmont then took the 3-2 advantage on a Pfeiffer miscue that led to an own goal in the 80th minute.
The Lions added an insurance goal in the 87th minute by Matthew Franklin to provide the eventual 4-2 final.
The two teams were evenly matched, with each registering 19 shots with Piedmont holding the 11-9 advantage of shots on goal.
Pfeiffer's Johvany Herrera (Concord, N.C.) took the loss for the Falcons in goal, while making seven saves and Piedmont's Cameron Verona also making seven saves.
The Falcons will return to play at Lefko Field on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 4:00 p.m., taking on Piedmont.
