Baseball Completes Sweep of Mary Baldwin With Two Saturday Wins

Pfeiffer Baseball Takes Two to Complete Sweep of Mary Baldwin

Misenheimer, N.C. (April 29, 2023)
– The Pfeiffer University baseball team won both ends of an afternoon doubleheader to sweep the final USA South series over visiting Mary Baldwin University on Saturday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field.

How it Happened
In game one, Pfeiffer got it started in the third inning when Josh Turner made it 1-0 with an RBI double to right field.  The lead would stay 1-0 until Jake Brown belted a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning to put Pfeiffer up 2-0.  Brady Parker and Austin Wood would then collect RBI singles to extend Pfeiffer's lead to 4-0.

Mary Baldwin would get their first run of the weekend with an RBI single in the eighth.

Pfeiffer pitcher Thad Lewis would throw eight innings allowing one run while scattering six hits to improve his record to 4-4 on the year.  Sam Safrit came in to pitch one inning of relief to earn his first save of the season.

In game two, Zach Ferrell and Jake Brown would hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to stake the Falcons to an early 3-0 lead.  Ferrell's blast was a two-run shot while Brown's would be his second solo shot of the day.

After MBU trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the second inning, Ferrell and Parker would again extend the Falcon lead to 4-1 on RBI singles.

Wood would collect at RBI on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to make it 6-1 in favor of Pfeiffer.

Brown would hit another solo home run, his second of the game and third of the day in the sixth inning to provide the 7-1 score.  Christian Ezzell followed with a solo blast of his own on a line drive down the left field line that boosted the lead to 8-1.  Josh Turner would hit an RBI double in the seventh inning to go up 9-1.

MBU managed a pair of runs in the ninth inning, but it was not enough as Pfeiffer took the game 9-3 and sweeping the three-game series.

Adam Bridgeman was credited with the win to improve to 2-1 on the season after tossing two innings allowing just a pair of hits.

The win improves Pfeiffer to 17-18 overall and 12-9 in USA South play while MBU completes their season with a 4-34 mark and an 0-20 showing in league play.

Pfeiffer has qualified for the upcoming USA South Tournament and will await their opponent once all league games are completed.
