Falcon Men Grab Season-Opening 62-47 Road Win at Averett

Falcon Men Grab Season-Opening 62-47 Road Win at Averett

Danville, Va. (Nov. 9, 2022) – The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 regular season with a 62-47 road win at former USA South and current ODAC foe Averett University on Wednesday night at the Grant Center in Danville, Va.

As the lone Falcon in double figures, sophomore Daymon Beckwith (Jacksonville, N.C.) scored a career-high 18 points after shooting 7-of-14 from the field while hitting a pair from long range.

Teammate Rashamel Butler (Ridgeland, S.C.) managed six rebounds and nine points in the win, while freshman Doug Smith (Badin, N.C.) had nine rebounds and six points in his collegiate debut.

Pfeiffer fell behind by as many as seven points in the first half (14-7)  but erased the Cougar lead with 3:32 left in the first half when Daniel Fulp (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored a layup to put Pfeiffer on top 24-22.  Pfeiffer would lead 31-22 at the break.  Over the last 6:12 of the first half, Pfeiffer went on a 16-0 run heading into halftime.

In the second half, Averett would trim the Falcon lead to 50-41 with 4:14 left, but that would be the closest the Cougars would get, as Pfeiffer took the 62-47 road win.

As a team, Pfeiffer would shoot 39.0% from the field on a 23-of-59 effort while finishing an effective 13-of-16 (81.3%) from the free throw line.  Averett would shoot just 27.9% (19-of-68) on the night and hit only one three pointer in the loss.  Pfeiffer would also outrebound the Cougars 50 to 39.

The win over Averett snaps a two-game skid for Pfeiffer, with the last Falcon win coming in the USA South East Division Championship game in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season.

The Falcons will next be in action this upcoming Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. when they take on St. John Fisher at the TowneBank Tipoff hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University.
